The existing ice surface was poured incorrectly, resulting in a concave surface that requires 33,000 gallons of water to fill and is 11 inches deep in the center. This requires dozens of hours of tedious labor that can go out the window with one warm afternoon. It also makes it incredibly difficult to plan and promote activities at the rink more than a couple days in advance.
The new project includes three major components. The primary one is installing the new ice surface, which begins with removing the existing surface. Then, a sub–surface is installed with coils connected to a refrigeration system to chill the surface and enable the creation of ice even during temperatures up to 45 degrees. This surface will be designed with footings to support a pavilion should one be desired in the future.
With the surface, we’ll install new hockey boards with a wooden exterior, new dark–sky–friendly lighting, fire pits, benches and outdoor tables. We’ll also purchase a zamboni to maintain a great ice surface.
The area surrounding the rink will also be enhanced with safe, accessible walking paths where non–skaters can be part of activities without risking dangerous falls.
The third segment is improvements to the warming house/ concession stand to create a larger, more inviting facility with games, tables, a fireplace and dressing rooms.
The total cost of these improvements is $3 million.
